The Artificial Clicks
The Digital Crown on the side of the Apple Watch is a smooth, continuous scrolling wheel. However, to make it feel like a mechanical dial on a traditional watch, Apple engineered the internal Taptic Engine to generate artificial physical resistance. As you spin the Digital Crown to scroll through a menu, the watch fires dozens of tiny, precise micro-vibrations into your finger, simulating the feeling of mechanical gear teeth clicking into place. While this is a brilliant feat of engineering, it consumes battery power and some users simply prefer a completely smooth, silent scrolling experience. You must disable the haptic feedback loop.
How to Turn Off the Haptic Crown
You can decouple the vibration motor from the scrolling wheel via the Sound settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
- Scroll down to the “Haptics” section.
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Crown Haptics.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Smooth Scroll
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely sever the software link between the rotational sensor and the vibration motor. When you spin the Digital Crown to scroll through your applications or read an email, the physical dial will feel completely smooth and frictionless, operating silently without generating any artificial mechanical clicks against your finger.
