The Spotlight Clutter
On an iPhone, when you swipe down on the home screen to access the Spotlight search bar, Apple assumes you need help deciding what to do next. The operating system utilizes an on-device AI called “Siri Suggestions” to instantly populate the screen with eight app icons it thinks you want to open, along with contextual actions like “Message Mom” or “Open Safari.” While this predictive intelligence is technically impressive, it heavily clutters the search interface. If you simply want a clean, blank search bar so you can quickly type the name of an app without the AI throwing suggestions in your face, you must disable the feature.
How to Turn Off Siri Search Suggestions
You can completely deactivate the predictive AI from the Spotlight menu via the Siri settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Siri & Search.
- Scroll down to the section explicitly labeled “Before Searching.”
- You will see a master toggle switch labeled Show Suggestions.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Blank Search Bar
The change takes effect instantly. The next time you swipe down on your home screen, the Siri AI will completely stand down. The eight predicted app icons and the contextual action buttons will completely vanish. You will be greeted with a perfectly clean, minimalist interface consisting of nothing but the keyboard and a blank search bar, allowing you to focus entirely on your manual search query.
