How to Disable Touchpad “Tap to Click” in Windows 11

The Ghost Clicks

Windows 11 laptops utilize highly advanced trackpads. To make navigation feel faster, Windows enables a feature called “Tap to Click.” Instead of physically pressing down on the trackpad until it clicks, you can simply lightly tap the surface of the pad with your finger to register a left-click. While this reduces finger fatigue, it is notoriously prone to “ghost clicks.” As you are typing a long document, the base of your palm might lightly brush the trackpad. Windows interprets this as a click, instantly moving your cursor to a random paragraph and ruining your document. To prevent this, you must force the trackpad to only register physical, mechanical clicks.

How to Turn Off Tap to Click

You can disable the capacitive tapping feature via the Bluetooth & devices settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Bluetooth & devices.
  3. In the main window, scroll down and click on Touchpad.
  4. Click the small arrow icon (>) on the far right side of the “Taps” section to expand the advanced menu.
  5. Look for the specific checkbox labeled “Tap with a single finger to single-click.”
  6. Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.

Firm Presses Required

The change takes effect instantly. You can immediately begin tapping the surface of your laptop’s trackpad, and the cursor will completely ignore it. You can rest your palms heavily on the laptop while typing without any fear of accidental clicks. To interact with an application, you must now press down firmly on the trackpad until you feel the mechanical switch physically engage.
