The Accidental Recording
Apple includes a hidden gesture inside the iMessage app called “Raise to Listen.” By default, if you have a text message thread open and you physically raise the iPhone to your ear, the microphone instantly activates and begins recording an audio message. When you pull the phone away, it immediately sends the voice clip to the recipient. While this is designed to make sending voice memos as fast as a phone call, it is notoriously sensitive. If you simply lift your phone from your lap to read a text, the gyroscope often misinterprets the movement, accidentally recording and sending seconds of random background noise to your friends. You must disable this physical trigger.
How to Turn Off Raise to Listen
You can completely sever the accelerometer’s connection to the Messages app via the system settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Messages.
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Audio Messages.”
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Raise to Listen.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Manual Audio Messages Only
The change takes effect instantly. The next time you have a text conversation open, you can lift the phone to your face as quickly as you want. The microphone will remain completely dormant. The only way to send an audio message is to manually press and hold the specific microphone icon next to the chat box, guaranteeing you never accidentally record a conversation.
