The Accidental Payment
Apple designed the iPhone to make contactless payments as frictionless as possible. By default, even when your iPhone is completely locked with a passcode, rapidly double-clicking the physical side Power button will instantly wake the screen and display the Apple Wallet, showing the last four digits of your default credit card and prompting FaceID to authenticate a payment. While convenient at the cash register, it is incredibly easy to trigger by accident when pulling the phone out of your pocket or adjusting the volume. If you prefer to manually open the Wallet app only when you actually intend to buy something, you must disable the hardware shortcut.
How to Turn Off Wallet on the Lock Screen
You can unbind the physical Power button from the Apple Wallet via the security settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
- Enter your 6-digit PIN code to access the secure menu.
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Allow Access When Locked.”
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Wallet.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Intentional Access Only
The change is instantaneous. The next time you lock your iPhone, you can aggressively double-click the physical Power button and absolutely nothing will happen. The Wallet app is now completely sequestered behind the lock screen. To make an Apple Pay transaction, you must unlock the phone with your face or passcode, locate the Wallet app on your home screen, and open it manually.
