The Unlocked Camera
Apple designed the iPhone Lock Screen for maximum convenience. Even if your phone is locked with a complex passcode, anyone who picks up the device can simply swipe left on the screen to instantly open the Camera app and start taking photos. While this is great for quickly capturing a fleeting moment, it is a privacy nightmare if you leave your phone unattended on a desk. Pranksters or malicious actors can fill your camera roll with unwanted photos or videos without ever needing your PIN code. To secure your device completely, you must disable this shortcut.
How to Turn Off Camera Access on the Lock Screen
You can revoke the lock screen’s permission to launch the camera via the Screen Time restrictions.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Screen Time.
- Tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Ensure the master toggle switch at the top is turned On.
- Tap on Allowed Apps.
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Camera.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Total Security
The change is absolute. If you lock your iPhone and attempt to swipe left, the screen will simply bounce in place, completely denying access to the camera hardware. Important Note: This Screen Time restriction completely disables the Camera app across the entire iPhone, even when it is unlocked. If you want to take a photo yourself, you must return to this menu and re-enable it.
