How to Disable the “Start Workout” Reminder on Apple Watch

The Proactive Interruption

The Apple Watch is constantly monitoring your heart rate and internal accelerometer data. If you start walking briskly to the train station or doing heavy lifting in your garden, the watch will often detect the exertion and throw a massive notification on the screen asking: “It looks like you’re working out. Want to record an Outdoor Walk?” While helpful for people who frequently forget to log their exercise, this pop-up is incredibly annoying if you are simply running late for a meeting and have zero intention of opening the Fitness app. You must disable the proactive workout detection.

How to Turn Off the Workout Reminder

You can disable the aggressive fitness pop-ups via the watch settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list (past the standard Apple apps) until you find Workout.
  3. Tap on Workout.
  4. Look for the toggle switch labeled Start Workout Reminder.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

End the Nagging

The change is instantaneous. You can now sprint through an airport or move heavy furniture, and the Apple Watch will remain completely silent, continuing to function as a normal watch. The internal sensors will still passively track your general activity rings in the background, but the watch will never again aggressively interrupt you to ask if you are exercising.
