The Midnight Interruption
When you place your Apple Watch on its magnetic charger at night, it automatically engages “Nightstand Mode.” The screen flips 90 degrees, displaying the time in large, bright green numbers, essentially turning the device into a classic bedside alarm clock. Because the screen would burn out if left on all night, it goes dark after a few seconds. However, it is designed to instantly illuminate the moment it detects even the slightest motion. If you share a bed with someone who tosses and turns, or if you bump the nightstand while reaching for a glass of water, the watch will aggressively blast bright green light into the dark room. If this keeps waking you up, you must disable the feature.
How to Turn Off Nightstand Mode
You can force the watch to behave normally while charging via the general settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
- Scroll down and tap on Nightstand Mode.
- You will see a master toggle switch labeled Nightstand Mode.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Dark Bedroom
The change is instantaneous. The next time you snap the magnetic charger onto the back of the watch, the screen will briefly show the battery percentage (exactly as it does during the day) and then fade to pitch black. No amount of table-bumping or vibration will trigger the bright green numbers, ensuring your bedroom remains completely dark while the device charges.
