The Constant Interruption
Google Chrome features a powerful built-in translation engine. By default, if you navigate to a website that is written in a language different from your operating system’s default language, Chrome will automatically drop a large pop-up window from the address bar, aggressively asking: “Translate this page?” While this is incredibly helpful if you are trying to read a foreign news article, it is highly intrusive if you are actively trying to learn a second language, or if you regularly visit websites that mix English and another language. If you find yourself constantly clicking the small “X” to dismiss this pop-up, you must disable the automated trigger.
How to Turn Off Google Translate Pop-ups
You can revoke Chrome’s permission to automatically offer translations via the language settings.
- Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
- Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
- Scroll down to the section specifically labeled Google Translate.
- Look for the master toggle switch labeled “Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read.”
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).
On-Demand Translation Only
The change is instantaneous. You can now visit any foreign website on the internet, and Chrome will remain completely silent, displaying the original text exactly as the developer intended. You have not disabled the translation engine entirely; if you ever find a page you truly cannot read, you can simply Right-Click anywhere on the blank background of the webpage and select Translate to English from the context menu, putting you completely in control of when the tool is used.
