How to Disable the “Show Desktop” Button in Windows 11

The Invisible Sliver

By default, the Windows 11 taskbar includes a hidden button located in the extreme bottom-right corner of your screen, just past the clock. This tiny, almost invisible sliver of pixels is the “Show Desktop” button. If you click it, every single open window instantly minimizes, revealing your wallpaper. While some users rely on this feature, others find it incredibly frustrating because they accidentally click it while attempting to close a maximized window or interact with the scroll bar, violently hiding all their work without warning. If you constantly trigger this feature by accident, you can permanently disable the hidden button.

How to Disable the Show Desktop Button

You can remove this invisible trigger via the taskbar personalization settings.

  1. Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Taskbar.
  2. Click on Taskbar settings in the small pop-up menu.
  3. A new Settings window will open. Scroll down and click to expand the section labeled Taskbar behaviors.
  4. Look for the specific checkbox labeled “Select the far corner of the taskbar to show the desktop.”
  5. Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.

The Safe Corner

The change is absolute. You can now violently throw your mouse cursor into the extreme bottom right corner of your monitor and click rapidly; absolutely nothing will happen. Your windows will remain exactly where they are. If you actually want to quickly minimize everything and view your desktop in the future, you must now explicitly hold down the Windows Key and press the D key on your keyboard.
