The Unnecessary Countdown
During the height of global health concerns, Apple introduced a “Handwashing” feature to the Apple Watch. By utilizing the microphone to listen for running water and the accelerometer to detect the specific motion of scrubbing your hands, the watch automatically triggers a 20-second countdown timer on the screen, complete with haptic taps to ensure you wash your hands long enough. While well-intentioned, this feature is highly prone to false positives. If you are washing dishes, scrubbing a pot, or even just rinsing a cloth, the watch will constantly buzz your wrist and start counting down. If you know how to wash your hands properly and find the constant buzzing annoying, you must turn the timer off.
How to Turn Off the Handwashing Timer
You can completely disable the audio and motion detection algorithms via the watch settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list (past the standard Apple apps like Messages and Phone).
- Tap on Handwashing.
- You will see a master toggle switch labeled Handwashing Timer.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
The Result
The change takes effect instantly. The Apple Watch will immediately stop using battery power to listen for the sound of running water. You can now wash dishes, clean your car, or scrub your hands without the watch constantly vibrating and throwing a 20-second timer onto the screen.
