How to Stop iPhone Apps from Automatically Installing on Apple Watch

The Cluttered Watch Menu

The Apple Watch is designed to act as an extension of your iPhone. To make the setup process seamless, Apple enables a feature called “Automatic App Install” by default. This means that whenever you download a new app on your iPhone (like a banking app, an airline app, or a smart home controller), the App Store checks if an Apple Watch version of that software exists. If it does, it silently forces the companion app onto your watch in the background. While this sounds convenient, the vast majority of iPhone apps are terrible to use on a tiny watch screen. Over time, your watch’s honeycomb app grid will become completely bloated with useless icons, making it impossible to find the apps you actually want to use. You should disable this mirroring behavior.

How to Turn Off Automatic App Install

You must sever this automatic installation bridge from the companion Watch app on your paired iPhone.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Ensure you are on the My Watch tab at the bottom left of the screen.
  3. Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
  4. At the very top of the page, look for the toggle switch labeled Automatic App Install.
  5. Tap the switch to turn it Off (the green background will disappear).

Manual Control

From now on, when you download an app on your iPhone, it will stay exclusively on your iPhone. If you eventually decide you actually want the watch version of a specific app (like Spotify), you simply open the Watch app on your iPhone, scroll all the way to the bottom to the “Available Apps” section, find Spotify, and tap the manual “Install” button next to it. This ensures that every single app on your wrist was placed there deliberately.
