How to Turn Off In-App Purchases on iPhone

The Accidental Billing Trap

Modern mobile games are notorious for utilizing “freemium” mechanics. The game itself is completely free to download from the App Store, but once you start playing, you are constantly bombarded with pop-ups offering to sell you virtual gems, extra lives, or character skins for real money. If you frequently hand your iPhone or iPad to a young child to keep them entertained, this is a massive financial risk. A child aggressively tapping the screen can easily trigger an in-app purchase, charging fifty dollars to your linked credit card in seconds. To prevent this, you should completely revoke the device’s ability to process internal game payments.

How to Turn Off In-App Purchases via Screen Time

Apple hides the master switch for financial transactions deep inside the parental control settings (known as Screen Time).

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Screen Time.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  4. If the master switch at the top of the screen is off, tap it to turn it On (green).
  5. Tap on iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  6. You may be prompted to enter your Screen Time passcode (this is a separate 4-digit PIN you created, different from your lock screen code).
  7. Tap on In-App Purchases.
  8. Select Don’t Allow.

The Locked-Down Device

The change is absolute and instantaneous. You can now hand your phone to a child with zero financial anxiety. The App Store will still function normally for downloading brand-new free apps, and you can still buy music or movies. However, the moment a game attempts to process a microtransaction, the iOS operating system will completely block the request, preventing any money from leaving your bank account.
