How to Disable the Return to Clock Timer on Apple Watch

The Frustrating Disappearing App

By default, the Apple Watch aggressively manages your screen time to save battery life. If you open a third-party application—like a grocery list app or a specialized workout timer—and then lower your wrist, the screen turns off. When you raise your wrist two minutes later to check your list again, the app is gone. The watch has automatically minimized it and returned you to the default clock face. This forces you to press the Digital Crown, find the app, and re-launch it every single time you need to glance at it. If you are actively using an application, you can force the Apple Watch to keep it on the screen permanently.

How to Change the Return to Clock Behavior

You can completely disable this automatic minimizing feature via the watch settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Return to Clock.
  4. Under the “Return to Clock” section, you will see a list of timer options (Always, After 2 Minutes, After 1 Hour).
  5. Select After 1 Hour. (Note: In some newer watchOS versions, “After 1 Hour” is the maximum allowed time to prevent severe screen burn-in, effectively acting as a “permanent” setting for any single session of use).

Creating App-Specific Rules

If you don’t want to change the global behavior for every app on your watch, you can scroll down further on that same settings page to see a list of every installed application. You can tap on a specific app (like “Reminders” or “Maps”) and change its individual setting to “Custom.” This allows you to force your grocery list to stay open for a full hour, while allowing your email app to instantly vanish back to the clock face the second you lower your wrist.
