The Window Clutter Problem
By default, when you double-click a folder in Windows 11 File Explorer, the new folder contents simply replace the contents of your current window. This is designed to keep your desktop clean. However, if you are working on a complex project and need to drag files from your “Downloads” folder directly into a specific “Project Assets” folder, the default behavior is infuriating. You have to open a second instance of File Explorer manually just to see both folders side-by-side. If you prefer the classic, old-school Windows behavior where every single folder opens in its own distinct, separate window on your desktop, you must change the core folder options.
How to Force Folders to Open in a New Window
You can change this global navigation behavior from the advanced File Explorer options menu.
- Open File Explorer (press the Windows Key + E).
- Look at the top menu bar and click the three horizontal dots (…) located on the far right.
- Select Options from the dropdown menu.
- A new “Folder Options” dialogue box will appear. Ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look for the section titled “Browse folders.”
- Select the radio button next to “Open each folder in its own window.”
- Click Apply, then click OK to close the dialogue box.
The Immediate Change
The change takes effect instantly. You can test it by double-clicking any folder on your C: Drive. Instead of the current window navigating forward, a completely new File Explorer window will instantly pop up on your screen. You can now easily drag and drop files between the two windows, making file management significantly faster for power users.
