How to Force Your Apple Watch to Sync Contacts from iPhone

The Disconnected Address Book

The Apple Watch is designed to perfectly mirror the contacts stored on your paired iPhone. When someone calls you, the watch should instantly reference your iPhone’s address book and display their name instead of just a raw phone number. However, this background synchronization occasionally breaks. You might add a new coworker to your iPhone, but when they text you an hour later, your Apple Watch only shows a random string of numbers. While restarting both devices sometimes fixes the issue, Apple includes a hidden troubleshooting button that forces the two devices to aggressively overwrite and resynchronize their contact databases.

How to Force a Contact Sync

You trigger this hard reset from the companion Watch app on your iPhone, not from the watch itself.

  1. Ensure your Apple Watch is turned on, on your wrist, and connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth.
  2. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  3. Ensure you are on the My Watch tab at the bottom left of the screen.
  4. Scroll down the settings list and tap on General.
  5. Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the General page and tap on Reset.
  6. Look for the option labeled Reset Sync Data.
  7. Tap Reset Sync Data once.

What Happens Next?

When you tap the button, absolutely nothing visual will happen on your iPhone screen. There is no loading bar, no confirmation pop-up, and no success message. This is normal. In the background, the iPhone is silently erasing all contacts and calendar entries currently stored on the Apple Watch and immediately pushing a fresh, complete copy of its own database over the Bluetooth connection. Leave both devices alone for about five minutes. When you check your Apple Watch messages again, the raw phone numbers should be successfully replaced by the correct contact names.
