How to Enable Compact Mode in Microsoft Teams

Why Use Compact Mode?

By default, Microsoft Teams uses a “Comfy” chat density setting. This layout places a significant amount of whitespace between messages, inserts large avatar pictures next to every reply, and uses speech bubble styling for text. While this modern, spacious design is visually appealing, it is highly inefficient for fast-paced professional environments. The default layout drastically limits the number of messages you can see on the screen at one time, forcing you to constantly scroll to read through active group conversations or catch up on missed threads. If you prefer an information-dense interface similar to classic IRC or Slack, you can enable Compact Mode.

How to Enable Compact Mode in Teams

Changing the chat density is a simple toggle within your main Teams settings. This change applies exclusively to your view and does not affect how other team members see the chat.

  1. Open the Microsoft Teams desktop application or web app.
  2. Click on the three horizontal dots (…) located in the top right corner of the window, next to your profile picture.
  3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  4. In the left-hand navigation pane of the Settings window, ensure you are on the Appearance and accessibility tab.
  5. Look for the section labeled Chat density.
  6. Click the radio button next to Compact.

What Changes in Compact Mode?

As soon as you select Compact Mode, you will immediately notice a difference in your chat windows. Microsoft Teams will remove the large user avatars from individual messages (moving names inline with the text), eliminate the speech bubble outlines, and drastically reduce the vertical padding between lines of text. This condenses the conversation, allowing you to see roughly 30% to 50% more text on your screen simultaneously. If you are participating in rapid-fire technical discussions, monitoring incident response channels, or simply reviewing long project updates, Compact Mode makes reading significantly faster and requires far less scrolling.
