The Blue Squiggles
Google Docs features a powerful, AI-driven grammar checker. As you type, it analyzes your sentence structure and word choices, highlighting potential errors with a blue squiggly line. While often helpful, this feature can be incredibly intrusive if you are writing creatively, using specific regional dialects, drafting technical documentation with non-standard phrasing, or simply typing notes rapidly. The constant appearance of blue squiggles can distract from your thought process, making you second-guess your wording when the grammar checker is actually incorrectly interpreting your intended style.
Disabling Grammar Suggestions
To write without constant interruptions and stop Google Docs from automatically suggesting grammar corrections and underlining your text in blue, you must disable the feature in the application’s Tools menu.
Open the Google Docs document you are currently working on. In the top menu bar, click on Tools. Hover your mouse over the first option, Spelling and grammar, to open the secondary flyout menu. In this menu, you will see an option labeled Show grammar suggestions. By default, there is a checkmark next to it, indicating the feature is active. Click on Show grammar suggestions to remove the checkmark. The blue squiggly lines will instantly vanish from your current document. Note that this only disables grammar checking; if you also want to remove the red squiggly lines for typos, you must return to that same menu and uncheck Show spelling suggestions as well.
