The Translation Nuisance
Google Chrome features a powerful built-in translation engine. By default, whenever you visit a website written in a language different from your operating system’s primary language, Chrome will automatically display a popup near the address bar offering to translate the page. In some cases, if you have clicked “Always translate” in the past, it will instantly convert the text without asking. While this is incredibly useful for general browsing, it is highly irritating if you are actively trying to learn a new language, or if you frequently visit a specific foreign news site where you prefer to read the original, untranslated text.
Blacklisting Specific Websites from Translation
To curate your browsing experience and stop Google Chrome from automatically translating (or offering to translate) specific websites, you must add those URLs to the translation engine’s “Never translate” list.
You can manage this directly from the translation popup. Navigate to the foreign-language website you wish to exclude. When the small Google Translate icon appears in the right side of the address bar (or when the popup drops down), click on it. In the translation menu that appears, click the three vertical dots (Options) next to the language selection. From the context menu, select Never translate this site. Chrome will immediately add the domain to a blacklist. In the future, whenever you visit any page on that specific website, Chrome will completely ignore the language discrepancy and will display the original text natively, without ever offering the translation popup.
