How to Stop macOS from Automatically Hiding the Dock

The Disappearing Interface

The macOS Dock (usually located at the bottom of the screen) is your primary launcher and task switcher. To maximize screen real estate, especially on smaller 13-inch MacBooks, users often enable a feature called “Automatically hide and show the Dock.” When enabled, the Dock slides off the screen entirely when not in use. To get it back, you must slam your mouse cursor against the bottom edge of the screen and wait a fraction of a second for the animation to play. For power users who constantly switch between applications using the mouse, or who rely on notification badges (like the red dot on the Mail icon) to monitor background activity, this automatic hiding introduces unnecessary friction and delays.

Locking the Dock in Place

To ensure your application shortcuts and notification badges are always visible and stop macOS from automatically hiding the Dock, you must disable the auto-hide feature in System Settings.

Open System Settings by clicking the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen. In the left-hand navigation pane, scroll down and click on Desktop & Dock. At the very top of the main window, look at the “Dock” section. You will see a toggle switch labeled Automatically hide and show the Dock. Click this toggle to switch it to the Off position. The Dock will immediately slide up from the edge of the screen and remain permanently fixed in place. Any maximized application windows will automatically resize themselves to ensure they do not overlap or obscure your newly persistent Dock, giving you constant access to your workflow.
