How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Snapping Windows

The Aggressive Multitasker

Windows 11 includes a feature called “Snap Layouts” designed to help users quickly organize multiple applications on a single monitor. When you drag a window near the edge or corner of the screen, a translucent outline appears, and if you let go of the mouse, Windows will automatically resize and snap that window into a rigid grid. While this is fantastic for working with two documents side-by-side on a laptop, it is incredibly annoying for users with massive ultrawide monitors who prefer to manually arrange floating, overlapping windows. Constantly fighting the operating system as it forcefully yanks your applications into predefined zones breaks concentration and workflow.

Disabling Snap Assist Features

To retain full manual control over your application positioning and stop Windows 11 from automatically snapping windows to the edge of the screen, you must disable the global multitasking behaviors.

Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app. Ensure you are on the System tab in the left-hand navigation sidebar. In the main panel, click on Multitasking. At the very top of this menu, you will see a master toggle switch labeled Snap windows. To completely disable all snapping behaviors—meaning windows will never automatically resize or stick to the edges no matter how hard you drag them against the bezel—simply flip this toggle to the Off position. If you still want the ability to snap windows by dragging, but simply want to stop the annoying popup that suggests other windows to fill the remaining space, leave the master switch On, but click the small arrow next to it and uncheck the box labeled “When I snap a window, show what I can snap next to it.”
