How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Resizing Tables

The Shifting Columns

Tables in Google Docs are a great way to organize data, but their default behavior can be infuriating. When you insert a table and begin typing a long sentence into one specific cell, Google Docs will automatically resize the width of that entire column to accommodate the text. In doing so, it simultaneously crushes the widths of the adjacent columns to ensure the table still fits within the document margins. If you carefully set up a spreadsheet-style table where every column needs to be exactly one inch wide, this automatic proportional resizing destroys your layout the second you add data.

Locking Column Widths

To maintain your precise formatting and stop Google Docs from automatically resizing tables and columns as you type, you must explicitly set and pin the column dimensions.

Hover your mouse cursor over the vertical border line of the specific column you want to lock. Your cursor will change into a two-sided arrow. Click and drag the line to set the exact width you desire. Once it is the correct size, you need to restrict its movement. Right-click anywhere inside that specific column. From the context menu, select Table properties. A sidebar will open on the right side of the screen. Click to expand the Column section. Check the box next to Column width, and type your exact desired dimension (e.g., 1.5 inches). Because you explicitly defined it in the properties rather than just dragging it, Docs will now force the text to wrap to a new line rather than automatically stretching the column width.
