How to Stop Google Chrome from Automatically Opening the Downloads Folder

The Intrusive Pop-Up

Historically, when you downloaded a file in Google Chrome, a small bar appeared at the bottom of the screen. Recently, Chrome updated this interface to a “Download Bubble” near the address bar. Alongside this change, many users found that Chrome began exhibiting a new, highly intrusive behavior: the moment a download finishes, Chrome will automatically pop open the Windows File Explorer (or macOS Finder) window, navigating directly to your Downloads folder. If you are trying to download multiple files in rapid succession, having a new folder window aggressively steal focus and pop up over your browser every single time is maddening.

Silencing the Download Folder

To keep your focus on the browser and stop Google Chrome from automatically opening the Downloads folder when a file transfer completes, you must check the settings of the newly implemented Download Bubble.

Start a small download (like an image) so the Download Bubble appears in the top-right corner of your browser (it looks like a small downward-pointing arrow). Click on the Bubble to open the list of recent downloads. Do not click the file itself. Instead, hover your mouse over the completed file in the list and look for a small folder icon or an options menu (usually three vertical dots). Click it. Ensure that the option Always open files of this type is unchecked, and more importantly, look for any setting within that specific bubble menu that says “Show in folder upon completion” and ensure it is disabled. If the behavior persists, it is often tied to an installed extension managing your downloads, which must be disabled via chrome://extensions.
