How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Deleting Comments

The Disappearing Feedback

Google Docs features a robust commenting system essential for collaborative editing. Users highlight text, leave a comment in the margin, and discuss changes. However, Google Docs manages these comments contextually. If a colleague highlights a specific sentence and leaves a comment saying “Rewrite this,” and you subsequently delete that sentence entirely from the document, Google Docs automatically resolves and hides the attached comment as well. While technically logical (the referenced text is gone), it can be disastrous if that comment thread contained crucial background information or a debate that needs to be preserved for the final project report.

Preserving the Conversation

Google Docs does not have a setting to stop it from automatically resolving comments when the anchor text is deleted. To preserve the comments, you must change your editing workflow and utilize the History panel.

First, never directly delete text that has an active comment attached if you need the conversation. Instead, use the Suggesting mode (top right corner, change “Editing” to “Suggesting”). If you strike through the text, the comment thread remains visible until the suggestion is explicitly accepted. If a comment has already been automatically deleted because you removed the text, you can recover it. Click the Open comment history icon (it looks like a speech bubble with lines inside) located in the top-right corner near the Share button. This opens a chronological feed of every comment ever made. Scroll down to find the automatically resolved comment, and you can still read it or click “Re-open” to force it back onto the document margin.
