How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Generating Outlines

The Cluttered Sidebar

Google Docs features a highly useful “Document Outline” sidebar located on the left side of the screen. This sidebar acts as an interactive table of contents. By default, Google Docs attempts to be helpful by automatically scanning your text as you type. If you format a line of text using a “Heading” style (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.), or sometimes even if you just make a single line bold and slightly larger, Docs will automatically grab that text and generate a new entry in the Outline. While great for long reports, it can clutter the sidebar with useless fragments if you are just using bold text for visual emphasis in a casual letter.

Managing the Outline

To keep your workspace clean and stop Google Docs from automatically generating unwanted entries in your Document Outline, you must manually remove them and rely on explicit formatting.

Google Docs does not have a global “off switch” to prevent headings from appearing in the outline; the outline is fundamentally tied to the Heading styles. If you want a line of text to be large and bold but not appear in the outline, do not use the “Heading 1” format from the styles menu. Instead, use “Normal text” and manually increase the font size and apply bold formatting. If Docs incorrectly guesses and adds a line anyway, hover your mouse over the unwanted entry in the left-hand Document Outline sidebar. A small ‘X’ (Remove from outline) icon will appear next to the text. Click the ‘X’ to instantly delete it from the generated list.
