The Disappearing Shortcuts
The Bookmarks Bar in Google Chrome (the horizontal strip located just below the address bar) is essential for quickly accessing your most-visited websites. By default, Chrome exhibits a highly specific behavior regarding this bar: if you open a completely blank “New Tab,” the Bookmarks Bar is always visible, forcing you to see it. However, the moment you navigate to an actual website (like Google.com or Wikipedia), Chrome automatically hides the Bookmarks Bar to maximize the vertical viewing area for the webpage content. This constant appearing and disappearing is visually jarring and makes navigation slower.
Pinning the Bookmarks Bar
To ensure consistent navigation and stop Google Chrome from automatically hiding the Bookmarks Bar when you load a webpage, you must pin the bar to the browser interface.
You can solve this with a simple keyboard shortcut or via the settings menu. The fastest way is to open Google Chrome and press Ctrl+Shift+B (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+B (Mac). This shortcut acts as a global toggle. Pressing it once will force the Bookmarks Bar to remain permanently visible at the top of the screen, regardless of whether you are on a New Tab or reading a long article. If you prefer using menus, click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner, hover over Bookmarks and lists, and select Show bookmarks bar so a checkmark appears next to it.
