The Lost Snippets
Windows 11 includes a robust “Clipboard History” feature (accessed via Windows Key + V) that allows you to store multiple text snippets, links, and images simultaneously. This is a massive productivity booster for developers and researchers. However, for security and privacy reasons, Windows is designed to be ephemeral with this data. By default, the moment you restart or shut down your PC, Windows 11 automatically empties the entire clipboard history, permanently destroying all your saved snippets. If you use the clipboard as a temporary notepad to hold important links for the next workday, this automatic clearing is a disaster.
Pinning Your History
To preserve your essential data across reboots and stop Windows 11 from automatically emptying the clipboard history when you shut down, you must manually “pin” the specific items you want to save.
Windows 11 does not have a global “never clear clipboard on restart” switch. The clearing process is hardcoded into the shutdown sequence. Instead, you must protect items individually. Press Windows Key + V to open the Clipboard History panel. Scroll through your list of copied text and images. When you find an item you absolutely must keep for tomorrow, click the small Pin icon located in the bottom-right corner of that specific snippet’s box. Pinned items are entirely immune to the automatic shutdown wipe and will even survive if you click the “Clear all” button. They will remain in your clipboard history indefinitely until you manually unpin and delete them.
