How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Sleeping When Inactive

The Unwanted Slumber

Windows 11 is designed to be energy-efficient out of the box. If you walk away from your computer, the operating system initiates a countdown. By default, after a relatively short period of inactivity (often just 10 or 15 minutes), Windows will automatically put the computer into a Sleep state to conserve power. While excellent for laptops running on battery, this is incredibly frustrating for desktop users or anyone running passive tasks. If you are downloading a massive video game, rendering a 3D model, or waiting for a long script to execute, having the PC fall asleep halfway through will pause or completely break your progress.

Keeping Your PC Awake

To ensure your long-running tasks complete successfully and stop Windows 11 from automatically sleeping when you step away from the keyboard, you must adjust the core power and sleep settings.

Press the Windows Key, type Settings, and hit Enter. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, ensure you are on the System tab. In the main right-hand panel, click on Power & battery (or just “Power” on desktop PCs). Look for the section labelled Screen and sleep and click on it to expand the options. You will see dropdown menus for “When plugged in, put my device to sleep after” (and a similar battery option if on a laptop). Click these dropdown menus and scroll all the way to the bottom of the list. Select Never. Your computer will now remain fully awake and operational indefinitely, even if you don’t touch the mouse for days.
