The Shifting Desktop
macOS offers several features to keep a cluttered desktop looking tidy. One of the most prominent is the “Sort By” or “Snap to Grid” functionality. If you have this enabled, macOS will take every file, folder, and image on your desktop and forcibly align them into neat rows and columns. Furthermore, if it is set to “Sort By Name,” the operating system will constantly reshuffle your icons alphabetically every time you add a new file. While this looks incredibly clean, it destroys any custom spatial organization. If you like keeping urgent work files in a messy pile in the bottom-left corner and personal files on the right, the auto-organizer will instantly ruin your layout.
Disabling Snap to Grid and Sorting
To regain pixel-perfect control over where your files live and stop macOS from automatically organizing the desktop, you must disable the auto-alignment features in the View Options.
Navigate to your Mac’s desktop and ensure no windows are actively selected. Right-click (or Control-click) on any empty area of the desktop wallpaper. From the context menu that appears, select Show View Options. A small floating window will appear. Look for the dropdown menu explicitly labelled Sort By. Click this dropdown and select None. This stops the alphabetical or date-based reshuffling. Next, look slightly below that for the Snap to Grid checkbox (or sometimes a “Sort By > Snap to Grid” dropdown option, depending on your exact macOS version). Ensure this is disabled or set to “None.” You can now freely drag your icons anywhere on the screen, and they will stay exactly where you drop them, even if they overlap.
