The Formatting Frustration
Google Docs attempts to be helpful by automatically anticipating your formatting needs. One of the ways it does this is by recognizing specific text patterns. If you highlight a paragraph of text and click the “Increase Indent” button on the toolbar, or if you press the Tab key at the beginning of a heavily indented section, Google Docs often assumes you are trying to create a formal “Block Quote.” It will automatically apply a deep left-side indentation to the entire paragraph, separating it from the rest of the text. While this is useful for academic writing, it is incredibly frustrating if you are simply trying to format a tiered list or align text beneath an image, as the aggressive indentation breaks your custom layout.
Breaking the Block Quote Habit
To retain absolute control over your document’s structure and stop Google Docs from automatically indenting text as block quotes, you must rely on manual formatting tools rather than automated shortcuts.
Unfortunately, Google Docs does not have a single toggle switch to globally disable the “auto-block quote” behavior. The system interprets repeated indentation as intent. The most effective way to stop this is to avoid using the Tab key for structural layout. Instead of tabbing, use the ruler at the very top of your document. Highlight the paragraph you want to move. Look at the blue triangle (the Left Indent marker) on the ruler. Click and drag this triangle to the exact position you want the text to align. By manually moving the ruler marker rather than repeatedly pressing the “Increase Indent” button or the Tab key, you explicitly define the paragraph margins without triggering Google’s automated block quote algorithm.
