How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Highlighting Text

The Lingering Color

When reviewing documents in Google Docs, users often utilize the highlight tool (the small marker icon) to draw attention to specific sentences. A common frustration occurs when you highlight a paragraph, apply a bright yellow background color, and then hit Enter to start typing a new thought. Google Docs automatically assumes you want to continue the previous formatting, causing every new word you type to be aggressively highlighted in yellow. This forces you to stop typing, manually navigate back to the toolbar, and remove the highlighting before you can resume your work.

Breaking the Format Chain

To stop Google Docs from automatically applying the previous highlighting to new text you are typing, you must explicitly clear the formatting or use a keyboard shortcut to break the chain.

The most efficient way to handle this without using the mouse is via the “Clear Formatting” command. If you have just finished typing a highlighted section and hit Enter, your cursor is now on a new line, primed to type highlighted text. Before you type a single letter, press Ctrl+\ (backslash) on Windows/ChromeOS or Cmd+\ on macOS. This instantly strips all applied formatting (including bold, italics, and highlighting) from your current cursor position moving forward. The next word you type will be in standard, un-highlighted text. Alternatively, if you prefer the mouse, you can look at the toolbar, click the Highlight color icon (the marker with a line under it), and explicitly select None from the top of the color palette before continuing to type.
