The Printing Problem
Google Docs is designed to be a universal word processor, but it often defaults its document dimensions based on your geographical region (e.g., defaulting to “Letter” size 8.5×11 inches in the US, and “A4” in Europe). If you frequently collaborate with international teams or submit documents to specific publishing platforms that require a strict page size (like A4 for European legal documents), Google Docs can be frustrating. If you create a new document, it will automatically revert to your regional default, forcing you to manually change the page size every single time you start a new project to ensure your formatting and page breaks align correctly when printed.
Setting a Global Default
To ensure consistency across all your projects and stop Google Docs from automatically changing or reverting the page size for every new file, you must establish a permanent, global default page setup.
Open any Google Doc (even a blank one). Look at the primary menu bar across the top of the screen and click on File. Scroll down the dropdown menu and select Page setup. A settings dialogue box will appear in the center of your screen. Look for the dropdown menu explicitly labelled Paper size. Click it and select the exact dimensions you require for all future documents (e.g., A4 21 cm x 29.7 cm). Once you have selected the correct size, look at the very bottom left corner of this dialogue box. Click the button labelled Set as default. Finally, click OK. From this moment forward, every single new document you create will automatically open using this specific page size, completely overriding Google’s regional assumptions.
