How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Generating Outlines

The Misinterpreted Text

Google Docs features a built-in Outline tool that appears as a side panel on the left of your screen. This tool is designed to act as a dynamic table of contents, allowing you to quickly jump between sections. To populate this list, Docs aggressively scans your document as you type. Every time you format a line of text as “Heading 1” or “Heading 2,” it automatically adds it to the outline. However, Docs also attempts to be “smart” by automatically guessing which text should be an outline item based on bolding or capitalization, often incorrectly pulling random short sentences into the side panel and cluttering the navigation view.

Taking Manual Control

To ensure your document navigation remains accurate and stop Google Docs from automatically generating outlines based on its own formatting guesses, you must turn off the auto-detection feature.

Open the Google Doc that is giving you trouble. First, ensure the outline panel is visible by clicking View in the top menu and checking Show outline. Look at the very top of the left-hand outline panel. You will see a small icon that looks like a bulleted list or a document summary (depending on your Workspace version). Hover over it, and if it says “Document Outline,” look for the small Settings gear icon right next to it. Click the gear icon. A tiny menu will pop up. Uncheck the option that says Automatically add headings to the outline. From now on, Docs will only add items to the side panel if you explicitly highlight the text and apply a strict “Heading” style from the formatting dropdown menu.
