How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Changing to Title Case

The Capitalization Chaos

Google Docs attempts to enforce standard grammatical rules as you type. One of the ways it does this is through its auto-capitalization feature, which ensures the first word of every sentence begins with a capital letter. However, this feature can sometimes behave erratically, especially if you are typing outlines, writing poetry, or entering specific brand names that require lowercase letters at the beginning of a line. If you hit Enter to start a new line and type a lowercase word, Docs might aggressively jump in and automatically change it to Title Case (capitalizing the first letter), forcing you to constantly hit backspace to correct its “correction.”

Disabling Auto-Capitalization

To retain complete control over your text formatting and stop Google Docs from automatically changing your lowercase words to Title Case at the start of a sentence or line, you must disable the auto-capitalization preference.

Open your document in Google Docs. Look at the primary menu bar at the top of the window and click on Tools. From the dropdown menu, select Preferences. A settings dialogue box will appear in the middle of your screen, defaulting to the “General” tab. Look near the top of the list for a checkbox explicitly labelled Automatically capitalize words. Click this checkbox to completely uncheck it. Once unchecked, click the blue OK button at the bottom of the box to save your changes. From this point forward, Google Docs will respect your exact keystrokes. If you type a lowercase letter at the beginning of a paragraph, it will remain lowercase permanently.
