The Intrusive Popup
Google Chrome is designed to be a universally accessible browser, and it aggressively promotes its built-in Google Translate service. Whenever you navigate to a website where the underlying HTML language tag differs from your operating system’s primary language, Chrome automatically drops a small popup window from the right side of the address bar asking, “Translate this page?” If you are a bilingual user who frequently reads news sites in Spanish and English, or a developer examining foreign code documentation, having to manually dismiss this translation prompt on every single page load is highly irritating.
Silencing the Translator
To browse in peace and stop Google Chrome from automatically suggesting translations via the address bar popup, you must disable the auto-translate feature within the language settings.
Open Google Chrome and click the three vertical dots (the customize menu) in the extreme top-right corner. Select Settings. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Languages. In the main right-hand panel, look for the section titled “Google Translate.” You will see a master toggle switch labelled Use Google Translate. Click this toggle so it turns gray (Off). This completely disables the translation engine, ensuring the popup never appears again. If you still want the ability to translate pages occasionally but just hate the automatic popup, leave that switch On, but look immediately below it for “Automatically translate these languages” and ensure the list is empty, and then manually right-click a page when you want it translated.
