How to Stop macOS from Automatically Organizing the Desktop by Date

The Shifting Desktop

macOS offers several ways to keep a cluttered desktop organized, including a “Sort By” feature. However, users often accidentally trigger an auto-sorting rule. If your desktop is set to automatically sort by “Date Added” or “Date Modified,” the operating system takes absolute control of the icon placement. You might carefully drag an important project folder to the top-right corner of your screen for easy access. But the moment you save a new screenshot or download a file, the auto-sorting rule triggers, instantly ripping your carefully placed folder from the corner and shoving it back into a rigid, sequential grid based on its timestamp.

Unlocking Free Placement

To regain absolute control over where your icons live and stop macOS from automatically organizing your desktop by date or name, you must disable the active sorting rule in the View Options.

Close or minimize all open windows so you are looking at your bare desktop. Right-click (or two-finger tap on a trackpad) on any empty, blank space on the desktop wallpaper. From the context menu that appears, select Show View Options. A small floating panel will appear. Look for the dropdown menu explicitly labelled Sort By:. If it is currently set to “Date Added,” “Date Modified,” “Name,” or “Size,” your icons are locked into a grid. Click the dropdown menu and change the selection to None. (You can leave “Snap to Grid” checked if you still want neat rows, but ensure “Sort By” is None). You can now click and drag any file or folder to any corner of your screen, and it will stay exactly where you placed it permanently.
