The Distracting Dropdown
Full-screen mode on macOS is designed to offer a completely immersive, distraction-free environment, hiding the Dock and the top Menu Bar so your chosen application consumes every pixel of the display. However, Apple built in a hover trigger: if you push your mouse cursor to the very top edge of the screen, the Menu Bar automatically slides down into view. While intended for quick access to system settings, this hover trigger can be incredibly annoying. If you are using a web browser and trying to click a tab near the top of the screen, or playing a game that requires precise mouse movements near the top edge, you will constantly trigger the Menu Bar, which covers up your tabs and breaks your concentration.
Locking the Menu Bar State
To maintain absolute focus and stop macOS from automatically showing the Menu Bar when you hover at the top of the screen in full-screen mode, you must adjust the Control Center settings.
Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Control Center. Now, look at the main right-hand panel and scroll down to the section labelled Menu Bar Only. Look for the dropdown menu explicitly labelled Automatically hide and show the menu bar. Click this dropdown. By default, it is likely set to “In Full Screen Only” or “Always.” To stop the hover behavior in full-screen apps, you must change this setting to Never. By selecting “Never,” the Menu Bar will remain permanently visible, even when an app enters full-screen mode, completely eliminating the distracting slide-down animation when you move your mouse to the top edge.
