The Unwanted Soundtrack
Mac keyboards feature a prominent “Play/Pause” media key (F8) designed to control your active audio or video. However, macOS has a highly frustrating fallback behavior. If you press the Play key, but you currently have no active media applications running (for example, you just closed Spotify or paused a YouTube video and closed Safari), macOS assumes you want to start listening to music from its native library. It will automatically launch the heavy Apple Music app in the background and begin playing the first track in your library, blasting unexpected audio and disrupting your workspace.
Breaking the Media Key Link
To prevent this jarring behavior and stop macOS from automatically launching Apple Music when you press the Play/Pause media key, you must use a third-party utility to intercept the key command, as Apple does not provide a native setting to decouple the button.
The most reliable, lightweight, and open-source solution is a small utility called noTunes. You can download it directly from its GitHub repository or install it via Homebrew (`brew install –cask notunes`). Once installed, open your Applications folder and launch noTunes. It will place a tiny icon (a musical note with a slash through it) in your top menu bar. That is all you need to do. While noTunes is running, it silently intercepts the F8 Play/Pause command. If Spotify or a web video is active, the key will still control them perfectly. But if nothing is playing, pressing the key will simply do nothing—Apple Music will remain firmly closed and completely silent.
