The Fractured Data
When creating complex reports or invoices in Google Docs, tables are essential for organizing data. However, Google Docs defaults to a strict pagination system, enforcing rigid 8.5×11-inch page boundaries. If you insert a large table near the bottom of a page, Docs will automatically split the table in half, leaving the first few rows on page one and pushing the remaining rows to the top of page two. This automatic splitting makes the data incredibly difficult to read, completely ruining the visual flow and structure of your carefully formatted information.
Keeping the Table Together
To ensure your data remains cohesive and stop Google Docs from automatically splitting a table across a page break, you must explicitly instruct the formatting engine to keep the table rows together.
Open your Google Doc and locate the table that is being split across the pages. Click and drag your mouse to highlight all the cells within the table (or simply right-click anywhere inside the table). If you right-clicked, select Table properties from the context menu. A side panel will open on the right of your screen. Expand the section labelled Row. Look for the checkbox option labelled Allow row to overflow across pages. Uncheck this box. If you want to ensure the entire table moves to the next page as a single block rather than splitting, highlight the whole table, go to Format > Line & paragraph spacing, and check Keep with next. This forces Google Docs to push the entire table to the top of the next page if it cannot fit entirely on the current one.
