The Shifting Spacing
When collaborating on a Google Doc, formatting consistency is key. However, users often run into a frustrating issue where the line spacing seemingly changes on its own. If you are typing a document with standard 1.15 line spacing and you copy a paragraph from another document that was formatted with 1.5 or Double spacing, pasting that text will not only insert the words, but it will also alter the line spacing for that specific paragraph, and often for any subsequent paragraphs you create by hitting the Enter key, forcing you to manually re-highlight and fix the spacing constantly.
Enforcing Default Spacing
To ensure your document maintains a uniform look and stop Google Docs from automatically changing the line spacing based on pasted content, you must explicitly define your “Normal text” style parameters.
First, highlight a paragraph in your document that has the exact formatting you want (e.g., Arial, size 11, line spacing 1.15). Once highlighted, look at the top toolbar and click on the Line & paragraph spacing icon (an arrow pointing up and down next to three horizontal lines). Ensure the spacing is set correctly. Next, click on the Format menu at the very top, select Paragraph styles, hover over Normal text, and select Update ‘Normal text’ to match. Finally, to make this the absolute rule for all future documents, go back to Format > Paragraph styles > Options, and click Save as my default styles. Now, even if you paste heavily formatted text, you can instantly revert it to your preferred, locked-in line spacing by highlighting it and selecting “Normal text” from the style dropdown.
