The Formatting Glitch
Google Docs provides a highly intuitive table creation system, but it occasionally suffers from a frustrating auto-formatting glitch. When you create a table and meticulously adjust the border thickness, colour, or dash style of specific cells to highlight data (such as creating a thick red border around a “Total” row), Google Docs will sometimes automatically revert all of your custom borders back to the default thin black line the moment you add a new row, press “Enter” inside a cell, or paste data from another source. This forces you to constantly re-apply your custom styling, wasting valuable time and breaking your workflow.
Locking the Border Properties
To stop Google Docs from aggressively overriding your custom table borders, you must utilize the dedicated table properties panel rather than relying solely on the quick-access toolbar icons.
First, highlight the specific cells (or the entire table) where you want your custom borders to remain permanent. Right-click anywhere inside the highlighted area and select Table properties from the bottom of the context menu. A sidebar will slide open on the right side of your screen. Click to expand the Color section within this sidebar. Here, you will find dedicated dropdown menus for Table border (colour) and Table border width. Define your exact styling preferences using these specific menus, rather than the icons on the top toolbar. When you apply border changes via this deep properties panel, Google Docs registers them as the foundational style for those cells, overriding the buggy auto-reset behaviour and ensuring your custom borders remain intact even when you edit the table structure.
