The Red Squiggly Distraction
Like all modern word processors, Google Docs features an active spell-checking engine that operates in the background while you type. Whenever it detects a word that does not exist in its internal dictionary, it immediately flags it by placing a jagged, bright red underline beneath it. While useful for catching genuine typos in formal essays, this aggressive highlighting is incredibly distracting if you are writing a technical manual, a fantasy novel with unique character names, or a document containing numerous acronyms and industry-specific jargon. The constant visual interruption of a screen covered in red squiggles can severely break your concentration and writing flow.
Silencing the Background Spell Checker
To clean up your screen and stop Google Docs from constantly evaluating and highlighting your specific terminology, you must completely disable the active spelling indicator.
Open the Google Doc you are currently working on. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Tools. From the dropdown menu, hover your mouse over the Spelling and grammar option to expand the secondary menu. Look for the option labelled Show spelling suggestions. If the spell checker is active, there will be a small checkmark next to this option. Click it once to uncheck it. Immediately, all of the red squiggly lines underneath your custom words and acronyms will vanish, leaving you with a clean, distraction-free document. Crucially, this does not delete the words from your document; it simply stops the software from actively drawing your attention to them.
