The Stubborn Empty Page
A very common and highly frustrating quirk in Google Docs occurs when you finish typing a document and find that an entirely blank, empty page has generated itself at the very end. When you try to print the document, save it as a PDF, or share it with colleagues, this blank page is included, making your work look unprofessional and wasting physical paper. No matter how many times you place your cursor at the end of your text and press the “Backspace” or “Delete” key, the blank page stubbornly refuses to disappear.
Revealing and Removing the Invisible Characters
Google Docs does not spontaneously generate blank pages; they are always caused by invisible formatting characters—usually a rogue “Page Break” or a string of empty paragraph returns—that have been pushed onto the next page.
To fix this, you must first make the invisible characters visible. Unfortunately, Google Docs lacks a built-in “Show Invisibles” button like Microsoft Word. Therefore, you must use a workaround. Place your cursor at the very end of your visible text on the second-to-last page (the page with your actual content). Now, press and hold the Shift key, and press the Right Arrow key repeatedly to highlight the empty space moving onto the blank page. Once the empty space on the blank page is highlighted blue, you will likely see a faint outline of a space or a return character. Press the Delete key (not Backspace) on your keyboard. Alternatively, click on the blank page, go to the top menu, select Format > Line & paragraph spacing > Custom spacing, and ensure the “Space after” value is set to 0. The rogue formatting will be deleted, and the blank page will instantly vanish.
