The Intrusive Definitions
Google Docs includes a built-in dictionary feature designed to help you quickly understand complex terminology. If you double-click a word to highlight it, or if you use the Ctrl+Shift+Y shortcut, a small sidebar or popup will appear displaying the definition of that word. However, some users find that their specific mouse configurations or trackpad sensitivity cause them to accidentally trigger this dictionary popup frequently when they are simply trying to select text for copying or formatting. Having the definition box constantly interrupt your reading or editing workflow can be highly frustrating.
Suppressing the Lookup Function
To prevent Google Docs from aggressively suggesting definitions when you interact with text, you must disable the integrated dictionary lookup feature within your Google account’s accessibility or editing preferences.
Open any Google Docs document. Navigate to the top menu bar, click on Tools, and then select Preferences from the dropdown list. A dialogue box will appear on your screen. Ensure you are on the General tab. Scroll through the list of checkboxes until you locate the option labelled Show dictionary suggestions or “Enable dictionary lookups” (the exact phrasing occasionally changes based on your Google Workspace version). Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark. Click the OK button to save the configuration. From now on, highlighting words or accidentally triggering the shortcut will no longer summon the intrusive dictionary definitions, allowing you to select text in peace.
