The Distracting Red Squiggles
Google Chrome features a built-in spell checker that actively scans the text you type into web forms, search bars, and online text editors. When it detects a word that does not exist in its internal dictionary, it automatically highlights it with a jagged red underline. While this is helpful when writing professional emails, it can become incredibly distracting and visually cluttered if you frequently type technical jargon, complex code variables, non-standard acronyms, or proper nouns that the browser fails to recognize, filling your text boxes with unnecessary red squiggles.
Disabling the Global Spell Checker
If you prefer a clean typing environment and rely on a dedicated word processor (or a specialized grammar extension) for proofreading, you can completely disable Chrome’s native spell-checking engine across all websites.
Open Google Chrome and click the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner. Select Settings from the dropdown list. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Languages. In the main window, look for the section specifically labelled “Spell check.” You will see a master toggle switch next to the phrase Check for spelling errors when you type text on web pages. Click this toggle to turn it completely Off. The change takes effect immediately. The browser will no longer scan your inputs, and the jagged red underlines will completely disappear from all text fields across the internet, leaving your technical terminology unflagged.
