The Transient Memory
Windows 11 includes a powerful Clipboard History tool (accessed by pressing Windows Key + V) that allows you to store multiple copied items—text snippets, images, and links—and paste them at your convenience. However, this history is designed to be highly volatile for security reasons. By default, Windows 11 will automatically empty the entire clipboard history the moment you restart or shut down your computer. While this ensures sensitive passwords aren’t left sitting in memory, it is incredibly frustrating if you use the clipboard history as a temporary notepad to hold important code snippets or reference links across multiple work sessions.
Pinning Crucial Items
Windows does not provide a master switch to permanently save the entire clipboard history across reboots. Instead, you must manually instruct the operating system to preserve specific, individual items that you do not want to be automatically deleted when the system shuts down.
To preserve your data, you must “pin” the items. First, copy the text or image you want to save. Press Windows Key + V to open the Clipboard History floating panel. You will see a list of everything you have recently copied. Locate the specific item you want to survive the next reboot. Look at the right side of that item’s box; you will see a small icon resembling a pushpin. Click this pushpin icon. It will turn solid or highlight, indicating the item is now pinned. When you restart your computer, Windows 11 will automatically delete all unpinned items in the history, but your pinned items will remain safely stored and ready to paste.
