The Intrusive Sidebar
Google Docs features a built-in “Document Outline” tool that automatically generates a clickable table of contents based on the heading styles used in your text. By default, Google Docs is configured to automatically pop this sidebar open on the left side of your screen whenever it detects a sufficiently long document with multiple headings. While this is helpful for navigating massive technical manuals, it can be highly intrusive if you are writing a standard report, as the sidebar suddenly consumes a significant portion of your horizontal screen space and shifts your entire text canvas to the right.
Closing the Default View
To stop the Document Outline from automatically pushing its way onto your screen, you must dismiss it in a specific manner. Google Docs remembers your preference for the outline sidebar on a per-document basis, so you must train the interface to leave it closed.
Open the Google Doc where the outline sidebar is automatically appearing. Look at the very top left corner of the grey sidebar containing your headings. You will see a small icon resembling a document with a left-pointing arrow (often labeled “Close document outline” when you hover over it). Click this icon. The sidebar will immediately slide closed, leaving only a tiny floating icon on the far left edge of your screen. Because you explicitly clicked the close button, Google Docs will now remember this collapsed state; the next time you open this specific document, the outline sidebar will remain hidden until you manually click the floating icon to reopen it.
