How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Adding Page Numbers

The Formatting Intrusion

When you create a new document in Google Docs, the platform applies a standard set of formatting rules based on traditional print media. One common frustration occurs when Google Docs is configured to automatically insert page numbers into the header or footer of your document. If you are writing a script, drafting a blog post intended for the web, or creating a continuous document where physical page boundaries are irrelevant, these automatically generated page numbers clutter your workspace and require manual deletion.

Removing Page Numbering

Unlike Microsoft Word, Google Docs does not have a single toggle switch in a master “Settings” menu to permanently disable page numbers for all future documents. Instead, you must remove the numbering system from your current document format. Open the Google Doc where page numbers are appearing.

Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Insert, then hover over Page numbers, and select More options. A dialogue box will appear allowing you to manage the numbering sequence. To completely remove the numbering, you cannot simply turn a switch off here. Instead, you must double-click directly on the page number inside the header or footer area of your document. This activates the header/footer editing mode. Highlight the page number with your cursor and press the Delete or Backspace key. Click anywhere in the main body of the text to exit the header/footer editor. The page numbers are now permanently removed from the entire document.
