The GNOME Lock Screen Bridge
In Ubuntu, the GNOME desktop environment uses a highly modular architecture. gsd-screensaver-proxy is a specific plugin belonging to the GNOME Settings Daemon (GSD). Its primary role is to act as a communication bridge (a proxy) between older applications that use legacy DBus API calls to inhibit the screensaver, and the modern GNOME Shell lock screen mechanism. For example, if you are running an older video player, it might send a “do not lock the screen” signal using an outdated protocol. The proxy intercepts this signal and translates it into a modern format that GNOME Shell understands, preventing your screen from going black while you watch a movie.
For standard desktop users, this daemon is useful for maintaining compatibility with older software. However, if you are running a strictly modern software stack (where all apps correctly use the modern org.gnome.SessionManager API to inhibit sleep), or if you are running a server GUI where you have completely disabled the lock screen and sleep functions anyway, this proxy daemon is entirely redundant. Disabling it removes a small, unnecessary background process from your session.
How to Disable the Gsd-screensaver-proxy Service
Because this proxy is loaded dynamically as a plugin by the main GNOME Settings Daemon, you cannot disable it using standard systemctl service commands. You must remove its execution privileges.
Warning: Disabling this may cause older, legacy applications (like outdated media players or presentation software) to fail at preventing your screen from locking during use.
- Open your Ubuntu Terminal.
- To disable the proxy plugin, remove its execute permissions by running the following command:
sudo chmod -x /usr/libexec/gsd-screensaver-proxy
(Note: Depending on your specific Ubuntu version, you may need to look in /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gsd-screensaver-proxy instead).
- Log out of your current GNOME session and log back in (or restart the machine) to apply the change.
GNOME will no longer load the legacy screensaver proxy, slightly reducing the complexity of your background session.
