The Pageless Format Shift
Google Docs recently introduced a feature called “Pageless Format.” Unlike the traditional view, which forces your text into strict 8.5×11-inch white rectangles with rigid margins, Pageless format creates a continuous, infinite canvas that stretches across your entire screen. It is fantastic for embedding wide tables, large images, and creating documents that are meant to be read purely on a monitor rather than printed on physical paper.
As part of this update, Google also allowed users to change the background color of this infinite canvas to reduce eye strain (such as switching from a glaring white background to a soft gray or dark blue). However, if you copy and paste text from another document that had a custom page color, or if you accidentally click the wrong formatting button, Docs might suddenly switch your entire document’s background color. If you need to print the document, a dark blue background will ruin your printer ink. You must manually reset the page color back to standard white.
How to Revert the Page Color
You can stop your document from displaying a colored background by modifying the Page Setup settings.
- Open your document in Google Docs.
- Look at the top toolbar and click on the File menu.
- Scroll down the dropdown list and click on Page setup.
- In the Page Setup dialog box, you will see two tabs at the top: “Pages” and “Pageless.” Ensure you click on the tab that corresponds to your current viewing mode (usually Pages).
- Look for the section labelled Page color (it will show a small colored circle).
- Click on the colored circle to open the color palette.
- Click the White circle (usually located in the top-left corner of the palette).
- (Optional) If you want all future documents to default to white, click the Set as default button at the bottom left of the window.
- Click the blue OK button.
Your document will immediately revert to a standard white background, making it safe for printing and standardizing the visual layout.
